![]() ![]() As we began our ascent to the top of Lose Hill, I would hear greetings to the sheep and the cows from our resident Londoner. Some of the group are serious city-dwellers, and the concept of ‘fresh air’ is as alien to them as rocket science is to me. Ordnance Survey grid reference: SK1343 8348. Start at the turning circle past Treak Cliff Cavern, west of Castleton via the A6187. The first one is Castleton Circular walk via Mam Tor. they are ever better from the summit of Mam Tor further up. Along with road cycling, the area is one of the most popular for Mountain bikers in the Peak District, with some excellent routes in the area including loops of the Derwent Reservoir and around Mam Tor. The route took us past the post office and shop, where we responsibly stocked up on water and snacks, before heading into the farmland behind. On Mam Tor you can also see some ancient Iron Age forts. There is a section of cliff edge to the south east of Mam Tor. Typically, the weather was overcast and windy despite the fact that most of the country was experiencing a mild heatwave that weekend! We started our walk at the National Park visitor centre in the picturesque village of Castleton. Mam Tor trig point affords an excellent view of Rushup edge, Edale, Kinder Scout, Lose Hill, Castleton and the Hope Valley. We chose to meet at Bamford, Hope Valley in the Peak District Britain’s oldest national park with beautiful vistas where, during the summer months, the much-loved peaks are painted purple by the natural heather that adorns them. Our group (above) had met in America, where we hiked America's national parks including Yosemite and the Grand Canyon together. ![]()
